I started Tesco Underwriting in November 2011 with no insurance experience at all.
I began my career in Motor Claims taking inbound calls, logging new motor accidents and dealing with customer’s general queries on how their claim is progressing. What attracted me to a Claims job in Tesco Underwriting was that although it was phone based, there were no targets and no script; you were also able to tailor the call and the solution to the individual customer rather than having to stick to a rigid dialogue.
A year and a half later, I began training new starters in the department (the training groups here are known as ‘Pods’) and have recently been promoted to a Pod Leader. I really enjoy training and supporting our new starters, as I understand from personal experience that coming into any organisation can be extremely daunting, however there is a good programme of support and assistance available throughout induction to make the transition from training to the live environment simple and straightforward.
There are always various projects to get involved in, and more recently TU have launched our first Apprenticeship programme where we have recruited a number of 16-18 year olds to start their careers in Insurance. I am currently assisting in providing training for our first group and I am looking forward to this challenge. It’s a brand new scheme giving opportunities for younger people to join a company in the insurance industry and begin their career, and again the whole Tesco Underwriting programme has been specifically designed to be right for the people taking part.
